In partnership with the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), dRMM and JA Projects are seeking a talented and enthusiastic local student for a five week summer work placement.

dRMM

dRMM is an international practice of architects and designers with studios in London and Berlin. Founded in 1995, it’s led by directors Alex de Rijke, Philip Marsh, Sadie Morgan, Jonas Lencer, Saskia Lencer, and Judith Stichtenoth.

We are a medium-sized practice with a global team size of up to 70 members. Our studio is known for creating architecture that is innovative, high-quality, and socially useful and has won numerous awards for our buildings, including the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2017 for Hastings Pier. Our projects range from urban design scale to individual buildings for private clients. We work diversely with local authorities, charities, schools, and developers, and have been prolific in housing and education sectors. In recent years, our portfolio has increasingly included light industrial, co-location and mixed-use projects that respond to the changing urban conditions of our cities.

 JA Projects

Founded by Jayden Ali, JA Projects is a London based practice working at the intersection of architecture, urban strategy, art and performance.

We work in culturally rich spaces, on projects we love, in places and contexts we care about. Our approach to architecture and city-making mirrors our social values – places should be diverse, supportive and enriching. Our work strikes a balance between playfulness and precision and is driven by a design ethos grounded in observation, participation and collaborative design.

Our ultimate goal is to weave beautiful stories and deliver exciting projects that speak to and for the people they serve. From ground-breaking exhibitions, through low-carbon buildings, to pioneering urban strategy, our projects intervene both socially and spatially to deliver a more sustainable and more equitable world.

What is mentoring?

Our methodology is simple, we carefully pair up young creatives with a mentor who works in their chosen sector.

The role of a mentor

The role of the mentor is to be a critical friend to their mentee - to act as both a support and sounding board, but to also challenge when needed. A mentor gives tools and advice to their mentee to progress professionally, empowering them to make connections and to progress off their own merits.

They support, champion, encourage and occasionally challenge their mentee whilst creating opportunities for them into jobs and onto career progression in a fast-changing, competitive and highly networked workplace.

The pairings are encouraged to have contact outside of the facilitated monthly sessions in order to see real impact of the relationship.

We have found that by encouraging the building of relationships between our mentees and mentors, they develop bonds that stretch far beyond the programme, creating new networks and renewed confidence to proceed in a world that all too often is about who you know, rather than what you know or how well you do it.

Mentor training and onboarding

At the start of every mentoring programme, we provide training and a handbook for our mentors containing best practice and other things to bear in mind.
