Freelance Exchange
A free series of educational masterclasses and events to support local creative freelancers
Freelance Exchange is designed to nurture and equip local emergent freelancers with the resources, knowledge and confidence needed to launch their freelance careers and remain adaptable successfully.
Its modular self-selecting programme means freelancers can register to attend the sessions or activities of their choice from a robust curriculum co-created with our growing community of freelancers and industry partners.
This session we are working with University of London to conduct paid research and insight to understand better how freelancers manage and understand climate change.
UCL is part of a large research project that has explored the complex systems that underpin the health of our cities. One of the outputs from this has been the production of a beautiful new book: The Work of Art in the Age of Planetary Destruction — CUSSH (projectcussh.org).
They are hosting a launch for the book at UCL East in our Marshgate building on the 24 October 2024 (tbc) and are keen to make this an inclusive and interesting event, which opens up conversations between UCL research and artists and creative communities.
The opportunity is for 3-4 early career creatives to undertake 10 min interviews in the lead up to the event, both with artists who have participated in the book as well as with the researchers who have been involved in the project. The organisers are particularly interested in the interviewees having an artistic (visual, film, audio) background and to be actively engaged with the climate emergency.

- You will be paid £250.00 (The fee includes all prep time and conducting the interviews)
- The fee will cover the following; your time which includes 10min interview with one of the artists who have participated in the book.
Eligibility:
- You meet the programme's eligibility requirements if you are aged between 18-30 and if you are a current resident of Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. What is mentoring?
Our methodology is simple, we carefully pair up young creatives with a mentor who works in their chosen sector.
The role of a mentor
The role of the mentor is to be a critical friend to their mentee - to act as both a support and sounding board, but to also challenge when needed. A mentor gives tools and advice to their mentee to progress professionally, empowering them to make connections and to progress off their own merits.
They support, champion, encourage and occasionally challenge their mentee whilst creating opportunities for them into jobs and onto career progression in a fast-changing, competitive and highly networked workplace.
The pairings are encouraged to have contact outside of the facilitated monthly sessions in order to see real impact of the relationship.
We have found that by encouraging the building of relationships between our mentees and mentors, they develop bonds that stretch far beyond the programme, creating new networks and renewed confidence to proceed in a world that all too often is about who you know, rather than what you know or how well you do it.
Mentor training and onboarding
At the start of every mentoring programme, we provide training and a handbook for our mentors containing best practice and other things to bear in mind.
